Derrick’s History

For much of its early history, the University of Findlay did not have an official mascot. The “Oilers” nickname first appeared in 1937, inspired by the city’s rich oil industry heritage and the hardworking crews who operated the drilling rigs throughout northwest Ohio in the late 1800s.

Over the years, several mascot concepts appeared on campus, but none became a lasting symbol of the University. That changed in 2000, when the University launched a campus-wide “Design the Mascot” contest to create an official representation of the Oilers spirit. Students were invited to submit their ideas, and the winning design came from Sarah (King ’02) Mitchell.

Mitchell envisioned a mascot that reflected the grit, toughness, and determination associated with Findlay’s oil field roots. Her design evolved into the now-recognizable character known as “Derrick the Oiler,” named after the oil derricks that once defined the region’s landscape. The winning design was unveiled during the 2000 Homecoming football game, marking the beginning of a new tradition for the University community.

Following nearly a year of development and production, Derrick officially debuted on Oct. 17, 2001, at an Oiler basketball game as the University’s first official mascot. Since then, Derrick has become one of the most recognizable and beloved figures on campus.

Derrick Today

Today, Derrick the Oiler serves as a spirited ambassador for the University of Findlay, bringing energy and school pride to athletic events, campus traditions, community celebrations, and student activities throughout the year.

From cheering on Oiler Athletics to representing the University at regional events and service initiatives, Derrick plays an important role in creating memorable experiences for students, alumni, and fans alike. He was even part of the excitement surrounding the Oilers’ undefeated 2009 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship season.

More than just a mascot, Derrick represents the hardworking spirit, resilience, and community pride that continue to define the University of Findlay today.
